Coffee vs oil Water Use MathematicsSomeone should probably double check my math. Unit conversion gets so complicated for me so quickly...
According to the Stolkholm International Water Institute: Behind that morning cup of coffee are 140 litres of water used to grow, produce, package and ship the beans. That is roughly the same amount of water used by an average person daily in England for drinking and household needs. The ubiquitous hamburger needs an estimated 2,400 litres of water. 3.785411 liters per gallon (US)
1000 ml = 1 Ltherefore 4 cups = 1 L and thus 1 gallon = 15.141644 cups. 1 barrel = 31 US gallonsIf 1 gallon = 15.141644 cups, then 1 barrel = 469.390964 cups or 117.347741 L.
SO: According to EPA, it takes 1,851 gallons of water to produce 1 barrel of crude oil. That's 59.70967 barrels of water to produce 1 barrel of oil. Going back to the start: If 1 cup of coffee uses 140 L of water: Then 1.193035 barrels of water is used to produce 1 cup of coffee. In order to put it on par with oil: 559.999848 barrels of water are required to produce 1 barrel of coffee.
Is this right?
